Support system

It’s so important, even crucial, to have a good support system. Not just people who will support you when you are struggling but also people who will be there to challenge you and help you grow when you need it the most. This can be so hard and not many relationships can survive it and yet successfully balance between supporting and challenging each other.

As a therapist I’ve noticed that way too often people (including myself) come to vent. Nothing wrong with that but just like with many things, too much of a good thing may not be so good after all.

Don’t get me wrong, we all need to vent. This helps us to get that steam off, feel connected with someone, get support and reassurance that we are doing the right thing, and feel better about ourselves at the end. But I also noticed that often too much venting prevents us from growing..

Challenging someone’s point of view is hard. Not every person can challenge us. Not every person will be able to do that successfully. We need to be open to accept that challenge, which can also be very hard as it requires lots of emotional courage, trust and readiness to grow and change on both ends. Just because someone is challenging us it doesn’t mean that they got it all figured out. Whoever is challenging us also needs to be open to recognize their own blindspots and be ready to grow. No one got it all figured out (Not even a therapist 😉 But at least, hopefully, we can be on the same page about that and grow and support each other together.

 

Your body is not a temple

I stumbled on this artwork posted by @femislay on instagram and absolutely loved it! I think this is a perfect illustration and a great reminder of how amazing our bodies [minds] are!

We are capable of restoring what’s broken. We are capable of becoming stronger after a major loss or trauma. We can grow and change. How easy though it is to forget that or just lose hope that you can?

If we don’t grow, we stagnate and then eventually die. Growth is scary and having a good support system that will give you strength for that growth is essential. Good support system is like a river that nurtures the forest [your body & mind] to grow and move forward.

How do you know that you have a good support system? How to build a good support system? I’ll try to talk more about that in my next post.

My name is Veronica. I am a daughter, sister, friend, wife, mom. I am a health foodie, photographer, art therapist, licensed professional counselor…  I am many things and so are you.

I believe that we have to work hard to achieve happiness, balance and fulfillment. One of the ways to do that is to strive towards improving yourself in as many roles in your life as you can – as someone’s child, friend, sibling, parent, partner…

This inspired me to start a blog dedicated to growth and self-development. I want to open a dialogue about different roles in our life and how we can grow and work on self-improvement together.
